Yes you heard it, it’s not okay to pee your pants, ever! This is an issue that must be addressed and although it is common, it is NOT normal. “I can’t jump, sneeze, cough or squat without peeing”. How about the women who attend workouts wearing a pad because they “leak” but are too embarrassed to say anything? I have even had clients come to my programs and tell me that their “Trainer or Doctor” told them it was “normal”, especially after pregnancy. It is absolutely not “ok or normal”.

Pelvic floor issues can occur during pregnancy however; they can also be brought on by stress due to repetitive high impact. You do not have to be a “Mom” to have Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. The good news is that it can be improved without surgery (surgery is a last resort). Don’t let your doctor tell you that you need surgery and don’t let people tell you “it’s normal”.
Been There, Done that…
I am a big fan of fitness, after all it’s my business at Fit4Females and a huge part of my personal life. I am also the Mom to three young children. The only thing I appreciate more than my workouts, is the strength of my pelvic floor muscles. I have pretty much done it all, I’m a runner, I practice yoga, I hit the weights, circuit train, box, I love my double unders, I have been a Cross Fit athlete and competitor and much more. I know all about pelvic floor issues (I did push out 3 babies that were almost 9lbs. each!)

You have to hand it to CrossFit, they made a video about “peeing during workouts” and the views are incredible so awareness is out there. This video depicts women admitting they “pee during workouts” and “maybe we are peeing because we are going harder”. The Gynecologist in this video even says “Ladies, in my professional opinion, it is ok to pee during double unders”. This is NOT normal.
No disrespect to CrossFit because as a competitive athlete, I have certainly pounded out my share of WOD’s (aka: workout of the day) and it is quite addictive as a competitive athlete. However, in my opinion, this Video is normalizing something that is not normal. Peeing your pants indicates Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, which can lead to organ prolapse, wearing pads and depends in the near future, surgery, pelvic pain, continued damage and embarrassment. Imagine these athletes in 10 to 20 years or a Mom who doesn’t address this issue now.
Take the time to rehabilitate your body. You might be in the best shape of your life but what’s the point if you are peeing your pants? Your training program must include pelvic floor rehabilitation (stop jumping, skipping, crunching, running, heavy lifting, burpees, planks).
I haven’t had a baby so that doesn’t apply to me?
These issues do not only apply to “moms and grandmas”. Many young athletes at the age of 14 are peeing their pants people! Coaches, Trainers, Fitness professionals, Moms, Dads – we need to address this and we need to educate ourselves and spread the word together.
I’m a Mom, it’s normal – NOT!
“I want my body back, I want to get rid of this tummy and I want to fit into my pre baby clothes” – that’s the number one priority of most moms. It is time shift our focus, unless you would rather keep peeing your pants and have all of your “lady” parts fall out?
You just spent nine and a half months with a baby pushing down on all of your organs, then you attended a labour marathon (whether it was via C-section or vaginal delivery) and now your organs are going to fall out because you can’t wait to shed the baby weight and start jumping and crunching. Take the time to rehabilitate now for later. What is Mummy Tummy and Diastasis Recti?

I pee my pants, what now?
The simple answer, go and see a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist. They can assess you from the inside out and they are incredible. They get their hands right in there and check the function of your “inner” lady parts (I’ve been there)! These tips are a must for you:
Book a Post Natal Assessment with us.
See a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist in your area *contact us for a suggestion in Hamilton, Dundas, Burlington, Binbrook, Stoney Creek
Stop high impact exercises and crunching (adds pressure to pelvic floor)
Take the time to rehabilitate yourself from the inside out
Contact an expert to ensure you do not have a Diastasis Recti – DR (extremely common in pregnancy but can happen from coughing, etc.). Book an assessment with an expert – Trina Medves, Bellies Inc. Certified Trainer for Hamilton, Stoney Creek and surrounding areas.
Practice the core breath video – Expert Kim Vopni’s video working on Pelvic Core Breath (do this every day!)
Stop listening to “it’s normal”
